Opvoedingsinvloede op 'n groep Klerksdorpse kinders in die laaste dekade van die twintigste eeu
Abstract
The aim of the research was primarily to determine by means of a normative framework who (educators) or what (educational situations) the real educators of a group of Klerksdorp children during the last decade of the twentieth century are. Secondly, the educational influence of the societal relationship structures on these children was identified so that the true nature of the education of these children at present, is outlined with greater clarity.
Ethnographical research techniques were used as the basis of the empirical investigation. The children were involved in the test sample by means of interviews and participative observation. Teachers, parents and ministers were involved by means of triangulation to cross-control the information. The information derived from the investigation was qualitatively and quantitatively analysed and discussed. Various factors prevented the researcher from absolutely finding out who/what the real educators of this particular group of Klerksdorp children during the last decade of the twentieth century are. Meaningful, conclusions could, however, be drawn concerning the educational influence impacting on the children. It is clear that there is a gradual shift with regard to educational influences that could be observed in this particular group of children in a semi-large city such as Klerksdorp. There are indications that the parents and the school still play a very important role in the education of the children, but that there have been certain shifts in the educational
influences. Despite the role played by the parental home/family and school in the
education of these children, the educational influence of these societal relationship
structures is weakening. Research indicates that the mass media and the peer group exercise a progressively stronger influence on the education and development of this particular group of children. These two societal relationship structures are gaining ground at the expense of other educational influences. According to the research done, the traditional educational triangle of parental home/family, school and church still play a role in the education of this particular group of Klerksdorp children. The role of the church, as wel as that of the community is,
however, diminishing slowly but surely; they do not always play a conspicuous role in
the education and development of the child. The role of the church, minister, ministering
and catechesis is diminishing in favour of the particular peer group and of various mass communication media in the case of this particular group of children. Various factors and causes of the shift of educational influences can be identified from the research done. The main cause is increasing parental absence, the over-organising of the child by the school, church and the parents. The church and community portray a lack of purposeful involvement with the education of this particular group of children and they seem to have lost contact with the viewpoints of these children. Peer groups
as pressure groups and the appeal of the mass media on the youth play a very important role in the shift of educational influences taking place. Based on the findings concerning the educational influences on these children (pre-adolescents) a number of practice-aimed recommendations are made in order to contribute positively to the achievement of the Christian educational aim.
