Thesis (M.A. (Greek))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.
The purpose of this study is to research the nature and the communicative functions of the traces of Psalms in 1 Peter. This is done through an interdisciplinary method of rhetorical criticism. This method includes an analysis and interpretation with the focus on the author, the readers and the text. The result is that this method combines rhetorics, epistolography and the historical approach. At the end of the study it becomes clear that the communicative functions of the traces of Psalms in 1 Peter are to make the readers aware of the things that they already accept. In this way the author can communicate his viewpoint effectively, because by reminding them of the things they already believe, he makes the readers more receptive to his arguments.
