It seems as if the discipline of keeping the day of rest is the “neglected orphan” of the church, despite the fact that God provides the example and that the day of rest enjoys prominence as his command. Research shows that people are wired to function according to a seven-day cycle. The question can therefore be asked if the disregard for this much-needed rest contributes to the universal epidemic of burnout and overload. In modern times with all the available technology, the tempo of life has only accelerated and people do not always get enough “time” to rest. This study aimed to emphasize the importance of making rest part of one’s lifestyle to prevent burnout. The research question was: What pastoral guidelines with regard to rest can be set down according to Biblical perspectives to prevent burnout? The research is set in the epistemological paradigm of practical theology, especially the pastoral component. The general aim of the research was to put forward pastoral guidelines based on Scriptural perspectives on rest in an attempt to prevent burnout. The research adhered to Osmer’s (2008) model and answered to the four tasks included in the model, namely empirical research, interpretative research, normative research and pragmatic research. The empirical research took the shape of a qualitative study, and although the study was limited, certain deductions were warranted. However, these deductions cannot be accepted as the norm. The interpretative task involved an in-depth literature study to address the aspects of burnout and rest. The normative task entailed grammatical-historical exegesis of certain parts of Scripture according to Reformed principles. God’s example and command regarding rest, as well as Jesus’s example and remarks on rest according to his Father’s stipulations, are discussed. The pragmatic part of the study offers pastoral guidelines that may enable councillors to offer people support and guidance to prevent burnout. The study reached the conclusion that the day of rest is a gift from God to humanity, and that it creates time and opportunity to experience intimacy with God and fellow believers, to experience the joy of togetherness with loved ones without the pressure of work, and to rest and be restored physically, spiritually and emotionallyen_US
