Onderrigstrategieë ter verbetering van die houding van leerlinge teenoor Afrikaans as skoolvak
Scientific research aims mainly at uncovering the true essentials of research objects, while simultaneously seeking findings and results that are true to reality. This study addresses the questionable attitude of schoolpupils towards Afrikaans as a school subject. It is an attempt to identify the factors that contribute towards, or have an effect. Recommendations resulting from the research results should be directly related to the effective teaching of Afrikaans. Bearing these purposes in mind, a questionnaire, addressing various aspects of the attitude of pupils towards Afrikaans as schoolsubject, was compiled and categorized into ten sub-scales. The Std. 9 pupils in twentyseven Afrikaans schools (including two double medium schools) in Pretoria were used as population. Five of these schools formed a random sample. According to the reactions of the respondents it became clear that pupils don't have a negative attitude towards Afrikaans as schoolsubject, but that they experience the tuition they receive in a negative way. This negative experience leads directly to low motivation, under-achievement, clumpsy language usage and poverty of expression. The purpose and recommended teaching stategies are mainly aimed at the improvement of teachingpractice and are all related to effective teaching, based on planning and motivation.
