Abstract

The aim of this creative-production project was to create environmental graphic design applications for the Ferdinand Postma Library of the North-West University (South Africa) and to report on the application of Scrivener’s Structure for Creative Production for the creative and research processes. In order to achieve these aims, research was conducted into two distinct areas: Firstly theories with regard to environmental graphic design and related design disciplines including identity design, information design and wayfinding design were investigated and, secondly, practice-based research was explored. The literature review led to the application of the Creative Production Structure advocated by Scrivener as a method for conducting practice-based research. The application of this five-step Creative Production Structure allowed for the successful compliance with the various requirements of the academic context wherein this project is situated: Firstly by offering a comprehensive, reasoned and reflective account of the creative production process and the research involved, a clear and transparent account could be provided - explicating the research method and techniques. Secondly, the application of this Creative Production Structure led to a structured and contextualised written argument. Thirdly, the creative and research processes facilitated the creation of successful and context-driven environmental graphic design applications which also embodied the research conducted. This study contributes towards the field of environmental graphic design by demonstrating how the Creative Production Structure, advocated by Scrivener as an approach towards practice based research, can be used to create successful and context-driven environmental graphic design applications.
