The platina mining industry is in a very healthy state. This is due to the fact that the demand for platina is higher than the supply. Everything is not always as bright though, because of the fluctuation in the rand dollar exchange rate as well as the fluctuation of the platina price the past five years. These fluctuations put tremendous pressure on the platina industry as a whole. For a healthy state of affairs variables like the exchange rate and the platina price should be properly managed by implementing the necessary control systems. This study focussed on the following aspects: 1. In the first place a theoretical (literature) study was done on the platina industry 2. Then a theoretical (literature) study was done on control systems 3. In the third place control systems were developed, applied and evaluated. Different control systems were investigated in detail. The focus was on the cost elements that have the biggest impact on the total production cost: Labour: The control systems see to it that the right persons are at the right places Material: This cost element is divided into three main cost elements namely explosives, explosive accessories and support material. Efficiency control systems like the different production control systems were the next section that was investigated. enables management to obtain information about the production process like quality, quantity and productivity. Management then uses the information provided to do their monthly production planning as well as to assess the productivity of the different production teams. v =study has found that control systems play a very important role in the overall management of the production process. It provides essential information for management to be able to make well informed decisions. Without effective control systems proper management of production units is not possible.
