Editorial

Professional journals are usually published by societies for the advancement of a specific branch of science or technology. Contree, however, was launched by a research institution to promote and co-ordinate research into South African local, urban, and regional history. The HSRC's Division for Research into Regional and Socio-economic History initiated this journal and publishes it, mainly because there was (and still is) no representative professional society for the advancement of these fields of study. Bearing in mind the wide interest that exists in socio-economic and regional history, Contree's editorial committee decided not to reserve it for the publication of selfinitiated research only, but to run it as an open journal. Judging from the large variety of research papers submitted spontaneously by uncommitted contributors during the past nine years, the effort has certainly been successful.

New developments in the publication of professional journals, however, have made it necessary to indicate beyond doubt that Contree is not an exclusive internal publication, but a full-fledged scientific journal for local, urban, and regional history. Hence the decision to publish Contree in future as a .'refereed" journal. A representative editorial advisory committee will advise the editorial staff on policy matters and also evaluate articles submitted for publication. If need be the editorial staff will make use of advisors with specialized knowledge of specific subjects.

Thus with the publication of the first reviewed edition of Contree a word of sincere welcome to all members of the editorial advisory committee who, for the next three years, will watch over this journal's interests; also a vote of thanks to the editorial advisors who have contributed to the publication of this number.

Redaksioneel
