dc.description.abstract • Summary: The discovery in early 1886 of the Witwatersrand main gold reef c hanged the area, within the space of a few months, into a thriving digging complex. However, the nature of the gold deposits determined from the beginning that the Witwatersrand was not a place for the individual digger, but rather for the capital strong companies. After three years the surface ore had already been exhausted and the entire industry - and with it Johannesburg - headed for a catastrophic collapse since the process to recover gold from the deep lying pyrite conglomerate was still unknown on the Witwatersrand. When this process became known and sufficient gold reserves were eventually discovered, the futures of the gold mining industry and of the Golden City were secured.
