The significance of citation impact indicators of research performance in the developing countries of sub-Saharan Africa

This paper argues that Sub-Saharan Africa needs to produce more journals indexed by
ISI Web of Science (WoS). Researchers from the region should also publish in other ISI
indexed, reputable and high impact journals such as Nature and Science. Inevitably, this
will make Sub-Saharan African researchers visible and globally competitive. The Sub-
Saharan African region has only about 40 journals out of over 12 000 journals that have
been indexed by the ISI Web of Science (WoS). Arguably, ranking of universities across
the globe and qualification for Nobel Prizes are determined by metrics-based evaluation
of research performance. Sub-Saharan Africa is poorly represented on the world
university rankings. The region has also produced only six Nobel Prize award winners
from 1901 to 2010. In the same period, USA, UK and Germany produced 326, 116 and
102 recipients respectively. While there are some limitations on the use of citation
indicators to evaluate research output, this researcher argues that citation impact
indicators of research performance provide policymakers, researchers and funding
agencies with an objective measure for assessing research performance and therefore are
of great significance in the developing countries of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Boundaries of the heart, transcended in the mind: Reflections on Td’s first decade
Tempelhoff, Johann
As Td approaches its second decade of publication in 2014 there is a need to reflect on the journey of exploration into what, in 2004, was considered to be the unknown and unfamiliar ecology of a transdisciplinary research platform. The emergence of an ever-increasing output of academic material by researchers active in South Africa and other parts of the world suggests that we have begun to integrate our understanding of what goes on in creative disciplinary minds.

Positiewe temas
vakmanskap

A framework to evaluate the functionality of mobile applications for music composition

Functionality
The functionality of a diverse range of mobile applications for music composition is discussed in
this paper. The focus is on generic functionality requirements, the needs of novice and expert
users to compose music and some of the mobile applications for music composition available
from the iTunes App Store. The paper further addresses the gap that exists in current literature
about the functionalities required of mobile applications for music composition. In order to assist
composers of music (from novices to experts) to identify and choose the most appropriate
application for composing music on a mobile device, a framework is developed against which the
functionality of ten mobile applications for music composition is evaluated.

The importance of a people-centred approach for Corporate Social Responsibility: a case study of Welverdiend and the surrounding community

Welverdiend
Despite the contribution of mining to the South African economy, this industry has
impacted negatively on the environment and society for many decades. These negative
impacts are mostly evidence of poor corporate actions. Instead of contributing to society,
it seems that mining companies, more often than not, neglect their corporate social
responsibilities (CSR) mostly in the pursuit of financial profit. It has been well
documented that it is mostly local populations, living close to mining operations, that
pay the price of social and environmental damages and degradation, while the industry’s
benefits are measured in economic and political terms. Such an imbalance between the
economic, environmental and social factors makes Sustainable Development impossible
to achieve.
Welverdiend, on the Far West Rand of Johannesburg, South Africa, is a community
paying a dear price in terms of social problems caused by mining operations. The aim of
this study was to assess the impact of mining on the social wellbeing of Welverdiend and
the surrounding community’s residents. In the light of these findings on different social
issues, the research aimed to confirm the importance of a people-centred approach to
Corporate Social Responsibility.
