Passover and its message in Old Testament times.
In this article the Passover and its message in Old Testament times are discussed, with special reference to the message of the Passover in Exodus 12; during the reform of King Josiah of Judah; the message of the Passover as celebrated by the exiles returning from Babylonia; and the message of the Passover for the people for whom the Chronicles were written. The discussion of the message of the Passover in these instances is preceded by a discussion of the references to the Passover in the books of the Old Testament. It is concluded that the Passover only had meaning when linked to repentance and the service of God It served to remind the people of God’s great deeds in the past, such as the exodus from Egypt, and as such it pointed to the possibility of great deeds of deliverance in the future. The Passover had a positive meaning only for believers.

Intelligence on three levels as core requirement for the pastor
In this article the requirement that a pastor should act and behave in an intellectually, emotionally and socially intelligent way is focused on. At the outset of the article intellectual intelligence is discussed metatheoretically. The functioning of the brain, especially of the neocortex, the sub-cortex and the amygdala is outlined as far as intellectual intelligence is concerned. Basistheoretically relevant requirements for being intellectually intelligent are then investigated, in particular relevant requirements for the sound equipment of the pastor as stated in the pastoral epistles. In this respect the following aspects are scrutinised: the requirement that the pastor should have the competence to instruct the congregation from God’s Word, and the requirement that the pastor should have the ability to equip his congregation in an intellectually sound way. In the ensuing part of the article metatheoretical viewpoints on emotional intelligence are outlined. Aspects like the following are indicated and mentioned as these should form part of the pastor’s equipment: the value of a sound self-awareness, a clear perspective on own competencies, a founded self-confidence, self-control, the ability to minister with certain aims in mind, to handle own emotional wounds, and in the last instance, the requirement of insight and how to cope with own emotions. The requirement that the pastor should exercise self-control and the conviction of being called by and cared for by his Sender, God, are included as basistheoretical material. As far as social intelligence is concerned, the following elements are taken into consideration on metatheoretical level: the ability to have an understanding for the situation of someone else and the competence to tune into the feelings of another person. Aspects of the requirement to create relationships, and issues of empathy are investigated and described basis-theoretically. In conclusion practice-theoretical guidelines are formulated for a possible implementation of intellectual, emotional and social intelligence in the ministry of a servant of God.

A supplementary formulary focused on the relation between Passover and Holy Communion
Can a supplementary formulary that especially focuses on the relation between Passover and Holy Communion enrich the celebration of Holy Communion? After an investigation into the course of events during Passover and the two moments Jesus links up with during the institution of Holy Communion, the researcher found that the following aspects can at least add to the meaning and experience of the celebration. During the eating of the bread (at Passover: the bread of sorrow), the participant is guided to think of and experience the sorrow of slavery to sin and to consciously surrender this guilt to Christ. The believer directly receives the assurance of the forgiveness of sins. During the drinking of the cup of thanksgiving the believer experiences the festive joy of redemption and reconciliation, and consequently feels a new beginning breaking through. This urges the believer to purify his/her life from the old sinful habits (the old yeast) as the result and consequence of the celebration of the Communion. The Communion should, due to its unique eschatological perspective (in contradiction to Passover) have the effect that the death of Christ is proclaimed in the daily life of the believer until He comes. An example of such a possible supplementary formulary is included.

Righteousness is an important term in the first gospel and has a significant concentration in
the Sermon on the Mount. The argument in this article is that the first gospel has a community
building function. Matthew intentionally uses the word ‘righteousness’ in the Sermon on
the Mount as an instrument to define the identity of his community. Though righteousness
can be used in a soteriological sense, it is argued that Matthew mainly uses it in an ethical
sense. By righteousness Matthew refers to the proper behavioural norms and attitudes for his
community. Commitment to Jesus forms the central focus of the community’s identity. Their
discipleship is demonstrated by doing the will of God as defined and interpreted by Jesus.
Doing the will of God in such a manner is what Matthew regards as the distinguishing mark
of this community. Thus they would surpass the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees.

Kerk ’n entscheidenden Wendepunkt [belangrike keerpunt]-voorskrif gee.
In
ABSTRACT: Mēden diakrinomenos in Acts 10:20 as entscheidenden Wendepunkt prescription of the Spirit.
It is generally accepted that the word διακρινόμενος in Acts 10:20 is used for the meaning
‘hesitate/doubt’ and therefore Peter is according to this verse, instructed to go with Cornelius’s
people ‘without hesitation’. In this article, however, it is argued that the word διακρινόμενος
is used for the meaning ‘to distinguish’ and that the Holy Spirit gives Peter and the Christian
Church an entscheidenden Wendepunkt prescript with the words μηδὲν διακρινόμενος. It is a
prescript which indicates that a particular epoch has come to an end, namely the epoch in
which Israel had to distinguish with regard to food and people. The prescript of the Spirit
μηδὲν διακρινόμενος also heralds a new epoch. In the new epoch, people do not need to become
part of Israel before they can be accepted by God. This new epoch was brought about by God
through Jesus Christ and his work of reconciliation. In the new epoch, God is no longer just
the God of Israel; his Anointed is Lord and Judge of all people of all times. In this epoch all
people from all nations who believe in Jesus Christ, receive forgiveness in his Name and all
people who believe in him, are one.

The doctrine on Christ brings us to the heart of our Christian faith and also that of dogmatics
and theology in general. It is therefore not strange that theological research throughout history,
and even more so today, focuses to a great extent on Christology. The problem statement
of this article is that the traditional reformed doctrine on Christ, and in close connection
to that the traditional doctrine on eschatology, is threatened. The aim of the article is to
investigate a certain aspect of the current debate from a South African point of view in order
to determine what the road ahead should be for reformed theology. This is done from within
the paradigm of the Calvinistic-reformed tradition. Apart from a short historical overview,
the article deals with the viewpoint of four South African theologians, namely Spangenberg,
Van Aarde, Müller and Bosch, whose viewpoints clearly illustrate the difference between a
more confessional, Scriptural approach and a more critical approach, especially with regard
to the divine nature and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. One’s view on the resurrection of
Christ has implications for one’s view on eschatology. It is the task of the reformed theology,
in the interim period between the ascension and the second coming of Christ, to proclaim and
glorify the risen, eschatological Christ.

Appeal to Scripture in the formation of ethical judgments, Part 1: An ethical understanding of women in the Bible. After 30 years of using the grammatical-historical method of Bible interpretation, it can be said to have failed to solve the ethical problems in GKSA of women in clerical positions and homosexuality. This method can in all probability not be used as the only explanatory method and must be replenished by other hermeneutical viewpoints. In this article, two hermeneutical points of departure are discussed that can be used together with the grammatical-historical method in interpreting Scripture. These hermeneutical viewpoints will be demonstrated in a discussion of the ethical understanding of women in the Bible, specifically as applied to women in clerical offices. In a subsequent article, three further hermeneutical points of departure will be discussed. The two hermeneutical points of departure discussed in this paper are known as the rule of purpose and analogy. The first hermeneutic point of departure is based on the view that the purpose behind ‘n biblical rule outweighs the rule itself whereas analogy assumes that reasoning by analogy is an acceptable and necessary point of departure. The hermeneutical starting points (five in total) mentioned above are built on two underlying assumptions. Firstly, it is assumed that the Bible, though a divine book, has a definite human side and should be considered in interpretation. Secondly, it is argued that Scripture is not a theological book, which means that believers should be afforded the right to come to their own interpretation of Scripture in ethical matters on which there are two possible interpretations. The conclusion is that an ethical understanding of women in the Bible means that women should be regarded and treated as equal to men, with the result that women should be allowed to all positions within the church.

Worship service as instrument in congregation-building – focused on the Gereformeerde Kerke in Suid-Afrika
In this article worship service as an instrument in congregationbuilding is investigated – basis-, meta- and practical-theoretically. Congregation-building is defined as the unique ministry by which the community of believers is led to become what they as believers have already become through Christ. Congregation-building is concerned with growth in three relationships, that is, the relationship between the believer and God, the relationship between the believer and his fellow believers and the relationship between the believer and the world. It is concluded that worship service implies a meeting of God and his covenant people. Worship service therefore has a strong element of mutual building up and witness. Having undertaken a limited empirical study, it was found that the above-mentioned basistheoretical perspectives have not been fully realized in the practice of the GKSA. Even though worship service is experienced as a meeting with God, the dialogical and corporate character of the service, as well as the mutual building up and the relationship with the world, is neglected. Practice-theoretical guidelines are given to rectify this situation by bringing practice closer to theory. The equipping of the believer as well as of the pastor is identified as major concerns. The establishment of a liturgical service group is thus encouraged. The final conclusion is that worship service has a cardinal role to play in congregation-building.

The concept and activity of obedience can be regarded as fundamental to human existence as
well as to Christian religion. The focus of this study was to investigate the occurrence of this
concept in the Gospel of John. Of the two well-known Greek nouns ὑπακοή and ἀπειθέω
(translated as ‘obedience’), and the two related verbs ὑπακούω and ἀπειθέω (translated as
‘obedient’), only ἀπειθέω occurs once (3:36) in the Gospel of John. The verb τηρέω has been used
several times and not consistently translated because of diverse literary contexts. The objective
of this study was to point out how the Gospel of John is filled with the obedience concept
and how it was implied from different perspectives. The following themes associated with
obedience will be discussed: (1) obedience to God as Father, (2) the essence of obedience – to
love, (3) various expressions of obedience, (4) the ability to obey, (5) Christian obedience is to
become like Jesus and (6) the rewards of being obedient.
Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The concept and activity, ‘obedience’,
are understood as a virtue fundamental to human existence, as well as fundamentally essential
and important for the Christian religion. This article investigates the occurrence of ‘obedience’
in the Gospel of John. To experience God’s blessings and enjoy God’s communion, God should
be obeyed.

It is suggested that a clear prophetic voice of the congregational gathering could change the
society to which the congregants belong. The problem is that this prophetic voice seems to
have disappeared in many cases. A solution might be found if the point of view is taken that
the prophetic voice in the congregational gathering is heard in the liturgical acts or rites. In the
science of Liturgy attention must be given to the revitalisation of the gift of prophesy. In this
article the prophetic testimony of the Old Testament prophets and of the Prophet, Jesus Christ,
were used as sources. Following in the footsteps of Brueggemann, an effort will be made to
establish in relevant scripture passages what the attitude and practise of prophetic testimony
should be. The possibility of rendering service through prophetic testimony as a liturgical act
in the South African society is wide open. Prophetic testimony serves to criticise the dominant
perception in order to dismantle it, but is also serves to energise persons and communities by
its promise of another time and situation towards which the community of faith could move.

In his academic and ecclesiastical work Prof. A. le R. du Plooy constantly urged that church polity should be executed in such a manner that the church is built intensively and extensively. As a tribute to this respected colleague I examine the teaching in Matthew’s Gospel (frequently called the ecclesiastical Gospel) on the nature and functioning of the church and how it should execute righteousness. I indicate how Du Plooy’s approach to church polity complies with the first Gospel’s teaching on the church and righteousness. I argue that a better understanding of Matthew’s teaching will enrich the current church in its practice of righteousness.

According to South African courts the main question to be asked for an evaluation of the relationship between a minister of religion and a congregation is: what was the "intention of the parties" with the calling and ordination of a minister? The answer to this question serves as an indication either for the application of labour law on the regulation of a minister's service or that the church has the authority to regulate the service via the applicable order or constitution of the Church. In this article the "intention of the parties" with the calling and ordination of a Reformed minister is evaluated in the light of Scriptures, the Confession of the Church, the Church Order of the Reformed Churches in South Africa, the concept form of the letter of calling and the Formulary for the Ordination of a Minister. In conclusion it is found that the "intention of the parties" is not to regulate the service of a minister on the basis of a contractuall relationship, but service to God according the principles He gave in Scriptures as it is formulated in the Confessions and regulated by the Church Order.

Abstract: Liturgical deductions based on the continuity and discontinuity of the Passover and the Holy Communion. The Service of the Word constitutes the climax and junction of the liturgy during the service, and the Holy Communion is the crucial confirmation and appropriation of the core of Scripture, namely Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. The question is whether liturgic deductions for the purpose of enriching the celebration of the Holy Communion can result from a consideration of the continuity and the discontinuity of Passover and the Holy Communion of our Lord. A literature study was employed in the investigation of this question. Passover is probably the one Old Testamentical festival that is of importance for research regarding the Holy Communion, precisely because Jesus consciously chose the time of Passover to instate the Holy Communion. Liturgical deductions are amongst other things made regarding both festivals as celebration of the great acts of redemption in history, the eating of bread and the drinking of wine during both festivals, the eschatological elements in both festivals and the elements of commemoration, proclamation and expectation in both festivals. In each instance the continuity and discontinuity are considered as well.

Did Abraham have to sacrifice his child? An ethical assessment. In Genesis 22 the God of the Bible commanded Abraham to sacrifice his child. Abraham accepted the command without interceding for his son. His actions – so different from his previous actions on behalf of people – can only be understood against the backdrop of God’s promise of many and blessed descendants through this son. Abraham would have realised that it was a test for his faith in the promise and omnipotence of God. The fact that Abraham’s acceptance of the assignment can not only be described as ethically just, but also be seen in accordance to the Bible, as an act of faith, are discussed in depth. The ethical assessment takes place, amongst others, according to the normativity of life, the principles of love and obedience

Metatheoretical points of departure with regard to scientific research in Liturgy.
To be able to thoroughly judge the new developments in liturgy, the metatheoretical underpinnings of the different viewpoints must be examined. When a researcher in the field of Liturgy does not take these alterations on his metatheoretical points of departure into consideration, one can be carried away by these schools of thought, or on the other hand, express an unscientific judgement in an impulsive reactionary manner. The objective of this research article is therefore to try and formulate reformed metatheoretical points of departure with regard to Liturgy and to determine the impact thereof in the context of alterations in the climate of thought, the world we are living in and the culture within which the scientific task is carried out. A further objective of the research article is to provide an example of the way in which this metatheoretical view can steer a research project. The way in which God is working through baptism and the effect thereof on forgiveness and reconciliation in the South African context, is an example of the way in which a research project can be undertaken in the science of Liturgy.

Holy Communion and want of bread
In Africa one out of three people suffers from undernourishment or malnutrition. In this respect the topical question whether Holy Communion and acts of charity to those who suffer from hunger can be linked. Jesus not only endows Holy Communion with a personal dimension of faith, but also foregrounds this aspect in the care for those who suffer from hunger. New Testament material reveals that in the congregation of Jerusalem partaking of Holy Communion developed into mutual diaconal care. It is thus for this reason inter alia that Paul warns against misusing Holy Communion. This kind of misuse was evident because the rich partook of Christ’s meal of love without realising that they could only be part of this act of love by bestowing love themselves. In this article some practical guidelines to link the celebration of Holy Communion and the crisis of want of bread are discussed.

Janz proposed a model of authenticity, based on the thesis that the closest proximity possible allows conditions for the Ultimate to become a referential framework within which the transcendental real meets with empirical reality. This is mainly expressed in terms of metaphysical time and space. This model may be usefully employed by religions that claim meeting with the transcendent and wish to do so on a rationally motivated basis. It is the author’s belief that this model may be employed by the Christian faith in conjunction with other similar models so that Christianity’s unique distinctives of its experience of the penultimate are emphasised.

Preaching the poetry of the Old Testament: The Psalms When preaching from the book of Psalms, it should be kept in mind that the book of Psalms as part of the poetry of the Old Testament contains the human answer of the believer to the revelation of God, as against other books of the Old Testament where the revelation is given directly, either by word or through the history of God’s people. Other typical facets of the Israelite belief as mirrored in the Psalms must also be kept in mind when explaining the individual psalms, e.g. the contrast between the righteous and the ungodly, the idea of retribution, the call for vengeance in quite a few of the psalms, and the pointing to the Messiah in some psalms. To gain a better understanding of the psalms a knowledge of the structure of Hebrew poetry is of the utmost importance. When a sermon is prepared on a theme from the Psalms, the specific Psalm should be analysed adequately, so that one can understand the main elements and the basic and specific content of the psalm. An analysis of Psalm 94 is used as an example to show how different kinds of analyses can lead to a better understanding of the psalm. This should, however, only be the first step to use the psalm as a theme for a sermon, although it remains an important step.

John Milbank is well known for attempting to develop a participatory theology. This article specifically assesses his Christology. The first section provides a synthetic explication of his Christology by focussing on his notions of participation, paradox, poesis, incarnation, the cross, and ecclesiology. The second section provides a critical assessment. The central argument is that Milbank’s Christology is inadequate in a participatory sense, because it lacks particularity and personal relationality. This inadequacy is probably due to the way in which he fuses Neo-Platonism and postmodern lingualism in order to construct his ontology. In orderto maintain his non-violent and poetic ontological position, Milbank needs to revert to a general, “high” and impersonal Christology, and disregard “low” Christology. However, if one’s ontological construction leads to a detached Christology, whichdoes not adequately affirm the central notion of one’s theology, serious doubts arise concerning the legitimacy of one’s method.

Dissatisfaction with the legal definition of the Church, as voluntary association (societas), bears the potential for creating conflict between Church and State - including for example possible lawsuits concerning topical issues such as "the Church and homosexuality" and the legal position of the clergyman. The core question is: How would an exact view of the Church's legal position in South Africa regarding religious freedom avert potential conflict between Church and State? The article points out that defining the Church as a voluntary association dates back to the period oftheAufkliirung. In Germany, where the Church was originally defined as a voluntary association, the current view of this definition is that it is an abstract and a-historical conception about the Church. Within the framework of it's legal position, three possible ways of defining the Church are explored. Firstly, the power to define the Church could be ascribed to the State. Secondly, the possibility exists for creating an objective measure for defining the Church. The third possibility, namely that the Church should be entitled to define itself, should be followed in South Africa. The right of the Church to define itself is an essential hallmark of the right of religious freedom in which the legal position of the church should be understood. By virtue of the Church's self-defining, the State is obliged to accord the Church a status that acknowledges the distinctive position of the Church within the State.

Since the inception of the Theological Seminary at Burgersdorp in 1869 the study of the Old Testament was part of the teaching programme in the Seminary. It was also one of the areas in which professors at the seminary, ministers and other members of these churches did postgraduate work and published books and scholarly articles. One of the first ministers of these churches who received a doctorate at the Free University of Amsterdam, was dr. P.C. Snyman, an Old Testament scholar who wrote a thesis on the prophecies of Zephaniah. This article focuses on the teaching of the Old Testament at the Seminary, theses on the Old Testament and related disciplines, and research as reflected in books and articles written by lecturers and students at the Seminar}’. The teaching programme at the Seminary of the Reformed Churches in South Africa (GKSA) was initially greatly influenced by developments in this regard in the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands. The theses and research of Old Testament scholarship in the GKSA reflect a conservative, reformed tradition in general.

The structure of Vergil’s Eclogues has been much discussed and various models have been proposed to describe the different ways in which the poems are linked to each other. Two general types of models have been proposed. That of the concentric or recessive panel is well known, but somewhat deficient in that it ignores the inner dynamism of the collection. Models that take these dynamic aspects into account do so at the cost of some of the advantages of considering the concentric panel. This article proposes a new model to describe the structure of Vergil’s Eclogues, based on a synthesis of existing models and relevant criticism, one that not only describes the simple thematic correspondences between individual poems, or plots the development of themes through the collection, but also attempts to express the different levels of closeness of correspondence between individual poems and groups of poems in the collection.

On the one hand the relationship between Church and Confession speaks for itself. The church is built on the confession (Matt. 16). On the other hand it is a subject that returns time and time again and has to be dealt with by churches of the Reformed tradition. Through out history, as is the case today, this relationship has been threatened. The question is whether the traditional reformed view can still be maintained. The church itself is a matter of faith (Cf the Nicean creed and Belgic Confession, Art. 27-32). In Scripture the unity of church and confession is proclaimed, inter alia in Matt. 16:18, Ephes, 2:20 and 1 Tim 3:15. In Reformed theology the same unity has always been maintained. The confession belongs to the essence of the church. However, this relationship is threatened today by aspects like the postmodern worldview, certain theological viewpoints, changed views on the church, a separation of science and faith, etc. The only answer for the churches in the Reformed tradition is to maintain the relationship between church and Confession. Without that, there is no future for the church

In a previous article it was argued that the grammatical-historical method of Bible exposition was no longer sufficient as sole method and should be supplemented with other hermeneutical points of departure. Following the discussion of two hermeneutical points in a previous article (Rheeder), this article will discuss three other hermeneutical points of departure, namely counterculture, non-scientific scope and moral-ethical interpretation. The counter-cultural point of departure is based on the belief that authentic witness in Scripture is found in that which is different (that which deviates) from the surrounding ancient culture, while a non-scientific scope starts from the view that scientific (or empirical) knowledge in the Bible is outside the scope or intent of Scripture. The point of departure of the moral-theological interpretation is the view that a moral-theological evaluation of love should inform the choice between two conflicting but mutually acceptable interpretations. It is concluded that an ethical understanding of women in the Bible means that women should be regarded and treated as equal to men, which leads to the further conclusion that all offices in the church should be open to women.

Clement of Rome’s letter to the Corinthians shows an interdependence of holy Scripture and prayer. In the context of this early Christian epistle, Divine revelation, primarily through Scripture, takes on an initiatory role for prayer. Clement considers the Scriptures as oracles of God in terms of their contents and authority. In his prayer-response to Scripture, both for contents and words, Clement shows himself inspired by holy Scripture. Consequently, Clement’s prayer is aimed at conformity of human behaviour to what he considers God’s revealed standards. As to the format of prayer in Clement to the Corinthians, words and expressions are largely borrowed from the sacred Scriptures. The agenda and themes of prayer in this letter are set by holy Writ as well, reinforcing the role of Scripture as initiator, standard and prototype for prayer, as the early church father reaches out to God.

Titus 3:3 as self-vilification: A rhetorical option
The rhetorical function of the vice list in Titus 3:3 remains to be accounted for. This article proposes that self-vilification, a novel rhetorical technique, be considered to investigate and propose a rhetorical function for Titus 3:3. The result is the identification and formulation of the overarching rhetorical objective of the verse in its totality. Titus 3:3 expresses a valuable corrective to Christian attitudes that could compromise the evangelistic or missiological mandate of the Church today.

The messianic interpretation of the psalms in a number of Antiochene and East Syriac psalm commentaries
The Antiochene exegetes interpreted the psalms against the backdrop of the history of Israel. They reconstructed a historical setting for each psalm. They reacted against the allegorical interpretation of the Alexandrian School that frequently interpreted the psalms from the context of the New Testament. This article investigates the messianic interpretation of Psalms 2 and 110, as well as the interpretation of Psalm 22, frequently regarded as messianic in non-Antiochene circles. The interpretation of these psalms in the commentaries of Diodore of Tarsus, Theodore of Mopsuestia and Išô`dâdh of Merv will be discussed, as well as the commentary of Denha-Gregorius, an abbreviated Syriac version of the commentary of Theodore. The commentaries of Diodore and Theodore on Psalm 110 are not available. The interpretation of this psalm in the Syriac commentary discussed by Vandenhoff and the commentary of Išô`dâdh of Merv, both following Antiochene exegesis, will be used for this psalm. The historical setting of the psalms is used as hermeneutical key for the interpretation of all these psalms. All the detail in a psalm is interpreted against this background, whether messianic or not. Theodore followed Diodore and expanded on him. Denha-Gregorius is an abbreviated version of Theodore, supplemented with data from the Syriac. Išô`dâdh of Merv used Theodore as his primary source, but with the same kind of supplementary data from the Syriac.

Pneumatological hymns: Basis-theoretical perspectives (according to Romans 8:1-21) and empirical facts
In this article Romans 8:1-27 is investigated in order to trace basis-theoretical perspectives on pneumatological hymns and to determine empirically the scope and nature of pneumatological hymns in Psalmboek, Liedboek van die Kerk and Psalter Hymnal. The basis-theoretical investigation reveals that there is a pressing need for appropriate Scriptural hymns on the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. Characteristics and functions of the Spirit that are essential to the church and her creeds are not found in current versifications of certain parts of Scripture. New hymns on the Person and work of the Spirit can preserve and breathe new life into creeds on the Holy Spirit, protect the congregation against fallacies and touch the hearts of doubters and unbelievers in a unique way. From the empirical facts an idea is formed of the state of affairs regarding the hymnology on the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. An investigation into themes on the Person and work of the Spirit not present in current Scriptural hymns also leads to the conclusion that there is scope for new Scriptural hymns.

In
werklikheidsbeskouing waarmee daar op die navorsingsveld van gemeentebou gefokus word;
ABSTRACT: Metatheoretical assumptions in scientific research about the ministry of the congregation. This
article is part of a series about taking into account the metatheoretical assumptions in scientific
practical-theological research. The first part of this series gives the theoretical foundation for
the view on reality-theoretical, hermeneutical-theoretical and scientific-theoretical approaches
to the research field. The second part focuses on the effect that these assumptions will have on
the scientific research of the various subject groups in Practical Theology. This article describes
the scientific approach to the research field of congregational ministry. This article describes
the personal metatheoretical perspective from which the subject area is approached and gives
account of the following: the view on reality with which the research field of congregational
ministry is studied; the foundation on which the hermeneutical viewpoint is built to attain
an understanding and a founded relationship between the elements that are applicable in the
ministry of the congregation; as well as in the last instance, to describe the scientific-theoretical
approach to the research field in a justified manner.

In this article, the focus will be on the findings of a qualitative research investigation (Putter 2006) of the role expectations of the AFM pastor and a literature study of theological training. It will probably show how joint progress towards components for continued theological training can be made. Training for the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) pastor for admission to the ministry varies from a one-year certificate to an honours degree in Theology, offered at various institutions. During the General Business Meeting of the AFM in 2008, constitutional amendments were approved that pave the way for having only one institution for theological training in the church. The new theological institution faces a major challenge, namely that of establishing relevant theological training, in order to avert the danger of being identified as an elitist, irrelevant work group, with its own pastor's language that is understood only by a small group of insiders.

Songs of praise – Basis-theoretical elements from Ephesians 1:3-14
The singing of new songs of praise is frequently introduced into the worship service without evaluating the contents of the songs properly. In this article Ephesians 1:3-14 is highlighted in an effort to ascertain whether basis-theoretical elements (measures for creating and evaluating) emerge from this pericope, and if they do, what these elements are. The structure and contents of Ephesians 1:13- 14 are studied to determine what basis-theoretical elements of the song of praise can be inferred from this pericope. Subsequently it is determined in what way the relation between dogma and doxa clarifies the investigation. The praise and worship movement is evaluated and an effort is made to summarize the basis-theoretical elements implied in Ephesians 1:13-14. In creating and evaluating praise songs a well-planned structure is necessary in considering elements like the refrain and the repetition of the most important themes. The praise song should celebrate the beauty of the Triune God and his great deeds. The praise song ought to have its origin in revelation and should interact with dogmatical elements. The praise song still plays an important role in the conservation and growth of the church. The praise song ought to be born from the struggle, pain and triumph of the church and not from motives of sentimentality and rabble-rousing.

Children’s Theology, theologising with children, or Child Theology has become an established concept in the discipline of religious education in Germany. The discipline departs from the point of view that children have a right to their religion, which makes the process of religious education the focal point. It is, however, important to understand the theology generated by children and also to create interaction with their religious views. This requires dialogue in which relevant questions are to be considered and discussed. The challenges for religious educators are subsequently treated.

How can God allow it? A bibliological enrichment of the theodicy issue from a comparison between the Book of Revelation and 4 Ezra
In the process of understanding and defining the relationship between God and man, the theodicy issue frequently floats to the surface. A long strand in the history of philosophy and theology has addressed itself to the task of reconciling God’s omnipotence and benevolence with human suffering and the existence of evil. Some of the philosophical and theological views are represented in this article. According to reformed scholarly presentation, theodicy should seriously take into account the soteriological and eschatological hermeneutical views. This is confirmed by the Old Testament, intertestamental literature and the New Testament. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the apocryphal 4 Ezra which puts surprising views about theodicy on the table.

The academic study of the biblical text often depends on the naïve assumption that a researcher can obtain stable knowledge of the single meaning of a text. This article investigated how the visio Dei in Matthew 5:8 has led to a variety of concepts through the centuries. This proves how different readers come to different readings. Interpreters should be aware of how their contexts impact on their understanding of meaning, but should also realise how taking cognisance of the wide variety of readings could enrich their own interpretation.

The author presents a survey of the men involved in the Afrikaans translations of the Bible, stretching from the earliest efforts to 1979. In the first section he presents the translators: ].D. du Toit, H.C.M. Fourie, B.B. Keet, ].D. Kestell, E.E. van Rooyen.
In the subsequent section he deals critically with the choice of source texts and comments on the final choices for both the Old and New Testaments. He also evaluates lexicographical materials used in the various translations.
In conclusion, he presents, as an example, four translations, ranging from the State ("Statevertaling") to the new 1979 translation of Psalm 128.

In South Africa the debate on Human Rights gained new impetus after the implementation of the interim constitution in 1994, followed by the new constitution in 1996, containing a charter of fundamental Human Rights. The question to be answered by this paper is whether Ezekiel 18 can contribute to this debate. This paper firstly discusses the question whether the Old Testament can be used in the debate on Human Rights. This is followed by a discussion of Ezekiel 18, with emphasis on the transgressions listed in this chapter in their Israelite context. Many of these injunctions are related to the laws of Deuteronomy, the Book of the Covenant and the Holiness Code. These injunctions are studied against the background of Israelite law in general and the three codes mentioned above in particular. Finally, the implications of Ezekiel 18 for the issue of Human Rights are discussed. The violation of rights of people guaranteed by divine law is seen as one of the major causes of divine punishment. God's law was meant to create a society found on justice. An unjust society is in contradiction to the will of God, according to Ezekiel 18. The implications of this view for the debate on Human Rights in South Africa need to be taken into consideration.

is pedoseksuele gedrag ’n wydverspreide probleem. Navorsing op hierdie gebied is ’n
pastorale uitdaging.
is.
ABSTRACT: Paedosexuality as manifestation of deviant sexuality: A clerical and pastoral challenge.
The focus of this article is to show that paedosexuality and paedophilia poses a challenge
to both the pastorate and the church. Not only in South Africa, but also internationally,
has paedosexual behaviour become a widespread problem. Research in this field poses a
pastoral challenge. According to the opinion of most people sexually deviant behaviour is
not something that occurs in the Christian community. This assumption, however, is not the
truth. Paedosexuality and paedophilia are present in all occupations, on every socio-economic
level, in all age groups, all cultures, in all sexual orientations and religions. Paedophilia can be
divided into two main groupings, namely the situational and the preference child molester.
The roots of paedophilia can usually be traced back to childhood and the dishevelment
developed during adolescence. Three types of life experiences are indicated as causal factors
in paedosexuality, namely sexual contact before the age of 16 with someone much older;
sexual contact before the age of 13 with members of their peer group; and non-sexual violence
committed against them – usually by a parent. The church must take the lead on this matter, as
there are no existing rehabilitation programs in South Africa for persons with sexual deviant
behaviour while sexual values are waning among the general population.

In teenstelling
vanselfsprekend aanvaar is. ABSTRACT: The philosophical-theological underpinnings of ‘missional’ church: A critical evaluation.
This article presents a perspective on the growing tendency – also in South Africa – to
characterise the church as missional. Thinking of the church in missional terms is apparently
in reaction against an earlier, static view that focused on the church as an institution, and more
specifically, an institution that functions by drawing people to itself. In contrast, the missional
approach to church wants to start with God, as the One that sends, and from that perspective
develops a more dynamic and communicative conception of the church. An important
implication of this would be to have the church much more present in and to the culture of
the world, in order to effectively point to a new reality. The research question informing this
article has to do with the philosophical and theological underpinnings of the missional church
approach. What assumptions about the relation between God and creation, or transcendence
and immanence, underlie this approach? What implications would the consideration of the
philosophical and theological assumptions underlying the missional church movement have
for its evaluation? These questions are answered by placing the missional notion of the church,
as well as the institutional-contractual notion against which it reacts, against the background
of a sacramental understanding of the church. The latter was the notion of the church that was
almost universally taken for granted in the first millennium of the church’s existence.

About 20 years ago the HSRC (Human Sciences Research Council) conducted an empirical investigation on the singing of psalms in three Afrikaans reformed churches. Vos and Müller (1990) dealt with different aspects of this investigation, especially the questions of which melodies are sung in the churches, what the frequency of the use of the different psalms is, the way in which new songs are introduced, the situation in the different churches and the influence of church attendance on the love of the psalms. In an investigation undertaken in 2008 (Van Rooy 2009) these matters were investigated in the Reformed Churches in South Africa, a denomiation that introduced a new hymnal in 2003. The comparison of the two investigations revealed that the number of favourite psalms and the same psalms remained fairly constant. The acceptance of new hymns is related to a number of factors, especially the melody and the liturgical usefulness of the new hymns. The new metrical version of the psalms is still not used very frequently in the Reformed Churches in South Africa. This can partly be ascribed to the lack of structured programmes to learn the new hymns.

This article studies the headings of the Psalms in the Dead Sea Scrolls, especially in relationship to the headings in the Masoretic Text and in the Septuagint. Special attention is given to those manuscripts that contain a substantial number of headings, such as 4QPsa, 4QPsb, 4QPsc, 4QPse, 11QPsa, 11QPsc, 11QPsd, He/Se4 and MasPsa. Special attention is also given to those Psalms where important variants occur in the headings, such as Psalms 33, 71, 91, 100, 104, 105, 123, 126, 130, 135, 144, 148 and 150. The results tend to demonstrate affinity with the Septuagint in only a limited number of instances, such as Psalm 33, 104 and perhaps 91. It does not seem as if the headings at Qumran have any special significance for the headings in the Septuagint. The results also indicate stability in the Hebrew headings (Masoretic text and Qumran) in the first three books of the Psalter. It is also clear that the situation with regard to 11QPsa is not different from the other headings from the corresponding sections of the Psalter.

Basic theoretical starting points on the character and foundation of a scriptural based liturgy
Liturgy denotes all the religious acts and activities performed by Christians when meeting God, listening to Him, and glorifying Him during the worship service and in life. Traditionally the expression “liturgy” referred to acts and activities performed during the Sunday worship service and primarily denoted the sequence of acts followed during the service. However, an etymological analysis of the concept “λειτουργία” indicates that liturgy is a dynamic action that points to the worshipping of God that flows over from the Sunday worship service into the everyday life of the Christian. Inorder to justify this paradigm shift, it is in the first instance necessary to formulate basic theoretical perspectives for the liturgy. These basic theoretical perspectives must be founded theologically, because liturgy forms a central component of man’s worship service. These perspectives must simultaneously provide an answer to the question as to how liturgy must theologically be viewed. The authors work from the viewpoint that liturgy is founded in the covenant and kingdom’s perspectives as lines of revelation.

Righteousness forms a significant feature in the first gospel. This article focuses on two of the
seven occurrences of this term in Matthew, where it refers to Jesus and John. The argument
in this article is that Matthew intentionally uses the word righteousness with reference to Jesus
and John to shape the lifestyle of his community. Jesus is the central focus of this community’s
identity. In solidarity with his people, Jesus fulfilled all righteousness. John is described as
a figure that rightly recognised Jesus and also fulfilled all righteousness in his teaching and
practice. The Matthean community should do the same. Though the word righteousness can be
used in a soteriological sense, Matthew uses it in an ethical sense. By righteousness Matthew
refers to the proper behavioural norms and attitudes for his community. He contrasts the
righteousness of his community with that of the scribes and Pharisees as a distinguishing
factor.

The Peshitta of Ezekiel had been regarded as a free translation since the time of Cornill to the Commentary of Zimmerli. Martin Mulder, however, regarded it as a fairly literal translation. The relationship of the Peshitta of Ezekiel to the Septuagint has also been described in different ways, with some scholars postulating a substantial degree of dependence of the Peshitta on the Septuagint. This paper will look at some aspects of the translation technique of the Peshitta of Ezekiel. This study demonstrates the freedom of the translator when faced with rare words and his use of idiomatic Syriac, but his fidelity to his Vorlage as well.

story of a Canaanite woman is complicated, because it contains Jesus' initial harsh attitude towards this woman. This story has led to some scholars assuming that Matthew is a Jewish document and the community behind it was a kind of Christian Judaism, not actively involved in the Gentile mission. However, from the literary point, this story contains several literary devices to highlight Jesus' dramatic healing of a Gentile patient. Jesus' initial responses are exactly what the contemporaries would expect of a rabbi. However, Jesus, like a wise teacher who uses a tactic to give an impressive teaching, expressed his reluctance to heal. The whole pericope functions as an intentional demonstration that Jesus did expand his ministry to a Gentile patient

In this article it is examined how Paul used slavery imagery in Galatians 4 when dealing with the theme of God's "children". The use of words related to the semantic field of slavery in Galatians is briefly discussed. Paul uses these words both with their literal meaning and in a figurative sense. This is also true for the main passage to be discussed in this article - the Hagar allegory. In Galatians 4, Paul first speaks about a real slave woman, and then uses this imagery to describe those who do not accept God's promises to have been fulfilled in Jesus. The way Paul uses the term "allegorise" is examined. It is argued that in Galatians 4 Paul uses the slavery imagery in order to speak about aspects of one’s relationship to God. The background of his use of the Hagar allegory is his "salvation historical" view concerning God's covenantal relationship to his people. He uses allusions to Old Testament texts to express his view regarding who belongs to God's people in the era of the new covenant.

In this article, the relationship between Christology and theology in John 1:1-5 is
addressed. In particular, the relationship between the Logos and God has to be
clarified. It is suggested that this relationship should be understood in the sense of communication between the Logos and God. This could then be interpreted further as that the Logos performed creation and the rest of God’s plans.

This article focuses on the polemic nature of Genesis 1-3 and the implications thereof on the reformed doctrine regarding original sin. In the first place the views of the creation narratives as historical-literal and mythological material is discussed. Thereafter the article proposes that the creation narratives must be treated as theological material with a polemic and prophetic purpose. The implications of this for the reformed doctrine on original sin are subsequently discussed.

Laments date back to the start of mankind and are known
among all peoples, languages and nations. Laments are often
spontaneous and unstructured, but sometimes they are structured
in poetic form. The biblical book of Lamentations is structured
according to the alphabet. The alphabetic framework that
forms the foundation of the book indicates that it has a cognitive
advancement/build up, and consists of a logically-anticipated
inception/beginning and conclusion. It starts with the first letter
of the alphabet and concludes with the last. According to
Jewish rabbis the alphabetic acrostic structure indicates that the
lamentation was completed in full – from start to finish.
With the constant development of Afrikaans a need exists for a
contemporary Afrikaans Bible translation. This article is an attempt
to present the book of Lamentations in a contemporary
alphabetic acrostic Afrikaans translation. The message and
structure of the book form a cognitive unit that must be preserved
as much as possible. A cognitive unit indicates that the
reader anticipates the logical build-up and it makes sense to
him/her. The acrostic structure is considered to be not only an
inherent part of the poem itself, but it could also be insightful
and illuminative to the reader

Initially there was not supposed to be a prophetic office in Israel. ‘Prophetism’ was considered
to be part of work that the priests performed. Thus, the priests were seen to be acting as
prophets. Generally speaking, the prophets of the Old Testament are described as people who
preached the Word of God. In the same way, priests are generally described as people who
fulfilled functions at the temple and whose task it was to sacrifice on behalf of the Israelites.
This article, however, argues that Yahweh intended much more through the establishment
and ministry of the priests than merely administer sacrifices. It is the contention that Yahweh
ordained the office of priests to preach the Word of God or to give advice in accordance with
the will of Yahweh as it is documented in the Torah. The article’s contribution to the subject of
prophetism in Israel will begin by studying the chronological history of Israel as it is described
in the Hebrew Bible. The terms prophet, prophecy and prophetism will also be examined as they
are used in the Hebrew Bible. By doing so, the article will show that it was only when the
priests failed in their prophetic calling or when Yahweh wanted to change the cult or political
establishment that He called people from outside of the established cult to fulfil the role of
prophet. Yahweh used the prophetic office in times of need. One may call it an emergency
measure – in times when the priests failed in their calling.

The formation of liturgical identity in response to the influence of a consumer culture
Liturgy in South Africa is continually interacting with the Western cultural heritage on the one hand, and increasingly with African culture on the other hand. However, another powerful influence on the local liturgy springs from the so-called global consumer culture. A few characteristics of the latter are inter alia the following: The emphasis on what the “buyer”, the worshipper and “potential” worshipper prefer; a show business attitude resulting in transforming members of the congregation into spectators rather than participants. Furthermore the emphasis is on the pursuit of effectiveness and the utilisation of technology to attain it and the focus is specifically on the needs of the individual and not on those of the community. The continual formation of liturgical identity is the answer to the mainly detrimental cultural processes currently manifesting themselves. The point of departure in forming a cultural identity implies an in-depth study of the liturgical guidelines indicated in the Old and the New Testament and the historical development of liturgy, especially in the second, sixteenth and twentieth centuries. The following aspects should, however, also be taken into consideration: the contemporary characteristics of the local indigenous culture, beauty of God, relationship between liturgy and culture, multi-cultural enrichment of liturgy, missionary aim and eschatological focus of liturgy.

In the Republic of South Africa, Christians are called to live out gospel imperatives within the legal framework of the Constitution. Ethical issues about the right to life are considered from the perspectives of selected gospel and constitutional imperatives. Gospel imperatives impose themselves as a consequence of Christian discipleship. These are many and diverse, both explicit and implicit. Christian vocation, discipleship, witness and perseverance, are foundational and integral to the praxis of Christian daily living. These facets of Christian life are illustrated by the selected gospel imperatives, “Follow me” (Matt. 4:19 and synoptic parallels), “Love God, and your neighbour as yourself” (Matt. 22:34-40 and synoptic parallels), and “Take up your cross” (Matt. 10:38 and synoptic parallels). The central theoretical argument of this article is driven from a reformed ethical perspective. Gospel imperatives have priority over constitutional imperatives since gospel imperatives are of divine origin and constitutional imperatives of human origin. Acknowledgement of these priorities informs the Christian ethical perspective on the right to life and on abortion.

Bioethicists and jurists put forward that the notion of “human dignity” adds nothing to the field of bioethics and is essentially a meaningless term. Against this presupposition the view is put forward that the notion of “human dignity” belongs to the heart of the Bible and can therefore be used as a valuable notion in bioethics. Human dignity is founded in the fact that man is created in the image of God. The fact that man is created in God’s image, and therefore has human dignity, undoubtedly has implications for bioethics. Human dignity by and towards man in bioethics has the meaning that one must strive for the healing of disease; that man must act and be treated as a psychosomatic unit; that reproduction may occur exclusively within marriage; and that all human life has to be maximally protected. Where the aforementioned does not occur, God-given human dignity is impinged upon.

ABSTRACT: Metatheoretical points of departure with regard to scientific research in Liturgy. To be able
to thoroughly judge the new developments in liturgy, the metatheoretical underpinnings of
the different viewpoints must be examined. When a researcher in the field of Liturgy does
not take these alterations on his metatheoretical points of departure into consideration, one
can be carried away by these schools of thought, or on the other hand, express an unscientific
judgement in an impulsive reactionary manner. The objective of this research article is
therefore to try and formulate reformed metatheoretical points of departure with regard to
Liturgy and to determine the impact thereof in the context of alterations in the climate of
thought, the world we are living in and the culture within which the scientific task is carried
out. A further objective of the research article is to provide an example of the way in which
this metatheoretical view can steer a research project. The way in which God is working
through baptism and the effect thereof on forgiveness and reconciliation in the South African
context, is an example of the way in which a research project can be undertaken in the science
of Liturgy.

The formerly-now motif in Ephesians is investigated in this article. Since the motif is an expression of conversion, it must correlate with the Pauline indicative-imperative theology. Conversion is a matter of change in relation to Christ, and change has both temporal and “spatial” (or rather positional) connotations. The temporal side of conversion is able to see things in its past and present contexts. In the past we were far from God, but now, at the present time, we have been brought near. Yet, what is being seen in temporal terms is also “spatial”; the former location and the now-location are exemplified. Before conversion we were dead in sins and outside Christ, but now we are alive in Christ. Four such conversion-dualistic concepts under the formerly-now motif in Ephesians are here demonstrated; and with all of them, also the correlating indicative and its corresponding ethical imperative

How can the Reformed Churches of African origin arrive at a Biblical and contextual liturgy for
their funeral services? Liturgy in death situations teaches people the meaning of death, and to
the African, a proper funeral service or burial is a sign of respect to the deceased. Guidelines are
given on how funeral services may be conducted so that they can help focus on the resurrection
of the body, and the new life waiting ahead, rather than on ancestral veneration. These guidelines
comprise a liturgy for mourning and funeral service, especially that at the graveside. This article
is liturgical and does not intend to be dogmatic in its research.

The term Allah is a term that quite often evokes strong negative emotions in the Western world. Since both the Bible and the Qur’an are being translated into Talysh, it is worth evaluating what term to use for God, and whether it would have a negative effect or not to use the term Allah in these translations. Suggestions are made from a Western point of view that Tanrı, a Turkish term for God, would be a better term touse than Allah, as the term for the word God in translations of the Bible. The Qur’an aswell as some Bible translations use the term Allah, which is one of the most common terms for God in the greater Turkic-speaking world in several languages. Should the Talysh Bible translation follow suit to make the translation culturally more acceptable?

thought and measuring it on the basis of research conducted among the 2012 RCSA Synod
delegates. Background regarding the change in thought is discussed and followed up by the
findings of an emperical study about the state of thinking, using three relevant statements.
These statements stem from the phenomenon of declining numbers in congregations. The
research is conducted at the Synod by means of a questionnaire, focused on the degree of
awareness among the delegates regarding the declining numbers of members as a crisis
situation in the reformed churches. Thereafter the possibility of a turnaround in thinking
towards the demands of the Great Commission was addressed. The last statement focused
on whether the entire South African population, regardless of language and culture, would
be regarded as the target group in case a changing in thought exists. The qualitative and
quantitative approach provide informative statistics, as well as insight regarding the shifting
in thought and the key position the Great Commission takes in the phenomenon of declining
numbers of members in congregations.

In this article it is argued that the practice of theology as a science, based on the presupposition that the Bible is the word of God, is inherently part of the calling and responsibility of the church. Therefore, practising theology as a science rooted in faith should also be ecclesiastically subservient to theology in general, and should indicate the way for the training of ministers of the Word. In this article it is argued that practising theology as a science rooted in faith is not to be regarded as an old-fashioned approach as this way of practising theology can be related to one of the positive trends in post-modernism: the increasing need for expressed presuppositions. This view stands in opposition to the rationalistic approach of theology in which the Bible is seen as a collection of texts of historical origin. According to the rationalistic view point, the Bible represents a collection of texts which reflect narratives of people’s experiences and should be studied historically-critically. Thus the Bible becomes an object of rational analysis. Should the focus of theology (in contemporary postmodern times) move to the phenomenon of religions emphasizing rational analysis, churches will have to take the sole responsibility for the training of future ministers – even if the consequence implies that the involvement of universities in theological training be excluded.

Although the Heidelberg Catechism (HC) does not deal with a systematic doctrine on God and
although there are not many sources available on the specific subject, it is a most important
subject when dealing with the theology of the HC (W. van ’t Spijker). Due to the prescribed
length of the article, it only focuses on two aspects of the doctrine on God, namely the Trinity
and the relationship between God and the cosmos (reality). Futhermore, today there is an
emphasis on a new concept of God, known as Panentheism. In this concept, God and his
creation are identified with each other. In the South African context, the article deals very
shortly with the viewpoints of Spangenberg, Van Aarde and Müller in this regard. The God
confessed in the HC is the triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the closest and most
logical coherence with this, the HC confesses the deity of Christ and of the Holy Spirit. The
HC also proceeds from the premise of the historical, bodily resurrection of Christ from the
dead. As far as the relationship between God and creation is concerned, the HC, in agreement
with the church of the first centuries, confesses and teaches a personal God, the Father of Jesus
Christ, who for the sake of Christ is the Father of the elect. This God is the almighty creator of
heaven and earth. He lives in a covenant relationship with his creation, which he sustains and
governs at every moment. He is both transcendent and immanent.

Doctrine on God and doctrine on Scripture: Focus and challenge. The choice of the title for this article must be seen against a specific background. In the first place it had to do with the place and task of dogmatics, in which the doctrine on God and the doctrine on Scripture are most important. Dogmatics can be defined as the scientific system of the knowledge of God and God reveals Himself in particular in Scripture. Secondly, it had to do with the actuality of the topic. In the current debate there is an emphasis on a new view of God as far as his relationship with creation is concerned. The term used is panentheism. And as far as the doctrine on Scripture is concerned, the question of the authority of Scripture is always on the agenda. As far as the term panentheism (all in God and God in all) is concerned, distinguished from deism, pantheism and theism, it was concluded that in Scripture we do not find any identity or fusion between God and creation, as the advocates for panentheism (the New Reformers and Julian Müller inter alia in South Africa) plead. As far as the doctrine of Scripture is concerned, the focus is on the question whether the Bible is the Word of God or the experience of man. The author of this article found himself in full agreement with the Reformed confession as formulated in the Belgic Confession, Articles 2–7. On the other hand, the advocates for a new view about God (panentheism) deviate radically from the Reformed tradition. The focus and challenge for Reformed dogmatics lie in the maintaining of the Divine authority of Scripture. In his Word, God reveals Himself as both the transcendent and immanent God (theism). This truth has specific implications for the doctrine on providence inter alia. When Reformed dogmatics is practised in cooperation with other theological disciplines, philosophy, literature studies, et cetera, theology in the end becomes doxology.

Liturgical solutions to violence – an exploration
Violence is an action that causes serious trauma – also in believers. The concept of violence should thus also be addressed and accounted for in all theological disciplines. In this article it is attempted to give an overview of what violence against women and children implies. Possible liturgical solutions to the phenomenon of violence are subsequently presented as seen from a feminist point of view. The viewpoint of the “liturgy of protest” is also discussed and finally the solutions suggested by acts of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission are scrutinised.
In gatherings of the congregation, of family members and small groups in the congregation the traumatised should not be neglected, and the aspect of koinonia expressed by the community of worshippers should bring comfort and hope to the wounded in the body of the church – also by means of liturgical acts. Opportunities should be created for people to interpret the pain and humiliation they have experienced. These opportunities can also be utilised to remove the element of embarrassment that usually accompanies this kind of pain and humiliation. In every element of reformed liturgy possibilities are indicated that can be utilised in the processing of and coming to terms with the trauma effected by violence.

Tithe was practised in the Old Testament, but the New Testament emphasises the attitude of the giver. Giving money is about relationships and goodwill. It is important that church members value their churches and commit themselves as constant givers. Tithing can be traced throughout the Old Testament to the New Testament (cf. Heb.). This article will begin with an introduction that offers the practical situation that compelled the institution of the tithe, followed by the Biblical background of tithing and an explanation of the goods or produce that was subject to the tithe. This will be followed by an investigation of the Old Testament perspective on tithing, including a consideration of the first fruits, the offering and the theological implications. Subsequent to this, the New Testament perspectives will receive attention. The NIV translation will be used as it is accepted as a good and reliable translation.

In the final stages of the modern period the power of hegemonic ideologies is coming to an end as people identify less with grand ideologies and more with subcultures related to technology and social and economic networks of different kinds. The post-Christendom phase has begun and is radically challenging Christendom notions of membership and ministry. We have to assume that in a post-Christendom society, the familiarity with Christian concepts will fade as the decline of Christendom has meant that Christian discourse has been losing its status as a lingua franca. It is therefore important that the church will anticipate longer journeys towards faith and not move on to disciple new converts too quickly. Post-Christendom evangelisation will consequently take longer, start further back and move more slowly. For these reasons the authors propose that the question of standards for membership be reconsidered where churches are planted in postmodern contexts. They propose that the old order of ‘believing before belonging’ be replaced by ‘belonging before believing’

In this article it is maintained that, despite the scepticism of some traditional philologists, narratology does provide an effective method which can lead to a fresh interpretation of Greek and Roman historiography. The relevant narratological concepts are defined, and the theoretical framework is briefly explained. The analysis of Tacitus’ Historiae Book I, chapters 1 ‐50, provides a practical illustration. Only two textual aspects; namely time and characterisation, are discussed in the analysis. The interpretation of the results of the narratological description shows clearly that, because of Tacitus’ rhetorical training, there is a dimension to his work which cannot be fully verified from other sources. The text demands from the reader the construction of the “unwritten” text. The narratological reading brings new appreciation for the Historiae as a work with real literary merit.

Preachers, white and black, in a patriarchal South-African society used to be in a virtually unassailable position of authority. Hence they could easily abuse their power and manipulate their listeners in sermons. Finding themselves in a situation of cultural change with the resulting changes in power structures, they are now in a vulnerable situation that calls for new possibility to open up new opportunities for finding a legitimate base of authority in making authentic contact with people living vulnerable lives in a vulnerable situation. In this article we research the impact of change on these preachers, their ability to adapt and opportunities posed by a position of vulnerability. Information obtained from sermon analysis and interviews culminate in the construction of initial theoretical guidelines for a new praxis.

This article studies the apocryphal Psalm 151, with special reference to the Syriac version in its relation to the versions of this psalm in the Septuagint and at Qumran. Four different sources of this psalm in Syriac can be distinguished, namely, a commentary on the psalms by Athanasius, a number of inanuscripts of the Peshitta and the Syrohexaplar, the manuscript 12t4 (containing the five Syriac apocryphal psalms as an addendum to the canonical psalms) and a number of other manuscripts with these apocryphal psalms. This psalm existed in more than one version in Hebrew. One version is reflected at Qumran in the psalms Scroll from cave 11 and another one in the Septuagint. The Syriac is dependent on the Greek, but clear signs of an inner-Syriac development can be discerned.

Several authoritative studies have indicated that Western people are currently experiencing a loss of meaning. This article states that this collective sense of loss of meaning is partly due to the fragmentation of Western rationality. It attempts to identify historical-philosophical factors that might have contributed to Western society's sense of the loss of meaning. Several shifts in Western history are identified and their contribution to the ultimate fragmentation of Western rationality is discussed. The shifts identified are the rise of voluntarism and nominalism, the effects of the Rennaisance and Reformation on Western society, the development of an autonomous anthropology, the rise of an immanent political and economical order, the surge in materialist ideologies in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, and the epistemological shift from modernism to postmodernism. The shift from realism to voluntarism and nominalism led to a greater separation between the transcendent and immanent realms and also a pursuit of instrumental rationality, while the Reformation and Renaissance brought about an emphasis on will, freedom and the reconstruction of society. The Enlightenment created an autonomous anthropology, that coincided with the construction of a purely immanent frame of reference that can function independently of God, while the transcendent becomes a domain outside the boundaries of human reason. Ethics are now founded in the human will, religion is purified from myths and supernatural concepts and Christian humanism is steadily being replaced by what Charles Taylor calls "exclusive humanism". The autonomous anthropology developed by Enlightenment thinkers would necessarily lead to the rise of an immanent political and social order. The traditional theocratic political order that was embedded in a higher sacral order is now replaced by an immanent social order founded on rights and horizontal humanism; a new kind of individualism originates that emphasises self-interest and the exchange of goods for mutual benefit; progress becomes a central societal ideal and greater differentiation takes place because a variety of rationalities in the public sphere are acknowledged that compete with one another. In the greater differentiation, individualism and pluralism that emanate from the construction of a new political and economic order we find the origins of the later fragmentation of Western reason, because all of of these social phenomena create fluid identities. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries were characterised by the rise of materialist ideologies such as Marxism, Communism, Social Darwinism and Capitalism. All of these ideologies are undergirded by an underlying will to power. The dangerous downside of Marxism, Communism and Social Darwinism manifested itself in the twentieth century in bloody revolutions, ethnic cleansings, genocide, two World Wars and a Cold War. Capitalism enhanced global inequality and contributed directly to the destruction of natural resources. The last big shift can be described as epistemological in nature and is constituted by the rise of postmodernism after the Second World War. Postmodernism is characterised by fragmented rationality, to such a degree that comprehensive systems of truth that provide all-encompassing explanations for reality have totally disintegrated. Various factors have contributed to this fragmentation such as the horrific results of global conflicts in the twentieth century, the nature of modernism itself, processes of pluralism and globalisation and developments within the natural sciences. The "death" of hegemonic notions of truth and the fragmentation of rationality inevitably cause instability and a sense of meaninglessness. The article concludes that Western people's collective sense of loss of meaning is systemic in nature and cannot merely be ascribed to psychological attributes or temporary social factors. This "systemic" problem needs to be addressed by the social sciences through the development of a new kind of rationality that averts disintegration

This article examines the cameo appearance of an unnamed woman in the gospel of Mark, a
member of a crowd following Jesus (Mk 5:24b–34). Chronically ill and probably dying, she
thinks she is inconspicuous. The text identifies her in terms of her gender, illness, covenant
status, prolonged suffering and penury. Yet, a careful reading reveals her stealth, desperation,
courage and eloquence − all elements of character and, it turns out, of a faith focused on
Jesus. Combining both literary and canonical insights, this article shows how the story of the
anonymous woman, set within the larger context of the healing of Jairus’ daughter, sheds
light on the developing concepts of faith, fear, purity, discipleship, confession and family
matters in Mark. The woman’s interaction with Jesus adds depth to Mark’s portrait of him
and contributes to the ongoing revelation in Mark that Jesus is indeed the Son of God (Mk 1:1).

opmerkelijke is.
sluit grote missionaire bewogenheid in. ABSTRACT: ‘Where to flee from this man’? A listening exercise in Ludwig Hofacker (1797–1828). In
sermons we cannot disregard the presence of the living God, otherwise preaching will become
a performance, without divine authority. Orthodoxy will be gasping for breath when exegesis
and dogmatic theology are wholly absorbed in a number of opinions, causing biblical testimony
to recede into the background. Ludwig Hofacker (1798–1828), was a preacher who in Bible
study and preaching put his ears to the Fountain. The Word of God was his sole homiletic
storehouse. Today, in our 21st century, his sermons are still being read. This indicates that
he left us a remarkable body of work. He tackled the problem of spiritual dearth in a time of
emerging humanistic rationalism. Hofacker’s preaching reflected his core belief: Christ only.
His sermons also reflect the preacher himself. His voice clearly recalls what was held so dear
in the Reformation, and the cadences of the sola gratia, sola Scriptura and sola fide are heard in
every sermon. His religious individuality included a strong motivation for missions.

The human dignity of the human embryo: the debate thus far
This article examines some recent arguments regarding the ethics of stem cell research as they are discussed in the various essays in the publication of Gruen et al. (2007), “Stem cell research: the ethical issues”. Regarding the use of human embryos in stem cell research, these essays discuss among other things the potential of the human embryo, the moral status (human dignity) of the human embryo, the creation of chimeras, the sale of ocytes and other ethical issues in modern bioethics. Eventually the article draws attention to the main ethical problems at stake to be dealt with by Christian ethics using a deontological ethical theory. Christian ethics should focus on these problems in the on-going ethical debate regarding stem cell research.

It is commonly held that irony features significantly in Susanna. This seemingly plausible
hypothesis, however, has not yet been supported by compelling evidence resulting from a
systematic analysis of Susanna. This study attempts to fill this gap by investigating the main
ironic expressions, words and incidents featuring in Susanna. The approach followed consists
of uncovering expressions of irony embedded in the story by paying attention to ironic use of
metaphor, ironic use of wordplay, ironic use of rhetorical questions, ironic understatements
(e.g. litotes), ironic exaggeration (e.g. hyperbole), ironic use of social conventions and traditions
and ironic attribution. It is the contention of this study that Susanna is a thematically ironic story.
The use of reversed social conventions is the most powerful and the most abundant expression
of irony in the story. This dominant derisive technique is possibly aimed at addressing the
irrelevance as well as the abuse of Jewish social conventions in the Second Temple period.

The use (recall) of Scripture is, in light of Christian ethics, a sine qua non when a position with regard to an ethical problem is assumed. A simple interpretation of Scripture does not necessarily settle the problem. Different interpretations of Scripture result in a difference of opinions even when the same Scriptural texts are used. It is therefore simply not sufficient to note a fair explanation of departure points or hermeneutical principles. The Christian ethicist should have an intimate knowledge of reality – ethics is not practised in a vacuum. In this article an adjudication of the use or interpretation of Scripture in the light of capital punishment was conducted. In this article it was shown that Scripture is most often misused despite of fair hermeneutical principles only to reflect the ethicist own preconceived ideas.

Protestant heritage is synonymous with the traditional employment of catechisms and
catechetical teaching of both young and old. Many denominations have shifted from this
historical approach, not least because of the challenges of so-called catechetical vacuums
when facing third-millennial issues. The Heidelberg, Anglican and Westminster Catechisms
allow for express distinctions peculiar to each unique Protestant faith constituency, but serve
acceptably within the wider ecumenical tradition. A rediscovery of the historical contexts of
these historical formulations will illustrate traditional denominational Protestant flexibility
accompanying its Christian creedal fixity. This study will refer to confessional content in the
main without resorting to particular content. The intention is to show how these polarities
could dynamically serve the confessing church in meeting present-day challenges to the
Christian faith in a manner that once again will inspire confidence in its catholic witness in the
third millennium.
