An empirical investigation into green solutions in NWU (Mafikeng Campus)
Abstract
A green campus can be defined as a higher education community that is
improving energy efficiency, conserving resources and enhancing
environmental quality by educating for sustainability and creating healthy living
and learning environment. The research contained herein, aims to study the
green activities currently on NWU Mafikeng Campus. The implication of this
study serves to ensure that there are clear objectives with regard to adopting
and promoting green education and awareness and to try for the
implementation and promotion of new innovative green teaching methods. The
result shows that is there is no consensus that the campus has clear objectives
to promote a green campus and also no conclusive comment on the questions
of if the campus continues to promote new methods of energy, water and
waste consumption on the campus. One of the main objectives of a green
building is to promote the construction of energy and resource efficient
buildings but respondents could not comment on whether campus implements
environmental impact assessments for new and existing buildings. However,
students indicated they would be interested in attending green campus
modules to effectively gain education on green and environmental affairs.
