Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compile pastoral play techniques, to help the sexually abused pre-adoloscent attain spiritual healing, through a Scriptural process. By using Osmer’s model for practical theology research, the researcher did an in-depth study on the nature, appearance and effect of sexual abuse on specifically the pre-adolescent. The use of play by children was discussed, as well as different play techniques and the process of healing within a non-directive, client-centered approach. By using semi-structured interviews, various people in ancilliary professions (social workers, ministers and pastoral counsellors) were interviewed to determine their knowledge regarding sexual abuse, play techniques and ways to help children who have been sexually abused. It was found that the role the church is supposed to fullfil when it comes to helping children who have been victims of sexual abuse was being neglected because of a lack of understanding and skill. The researcher also studied specific Biblical texts concerning sexual violence and texts that affirmed God’s love for little children. By integrating all the information, the researcher could introduce a model to be used within a pastoral context to help pre-adolescents who were sexually abused. By using play techniques that were highligted with certain Scriptures, these children could be helped to regain spiritual wellness.
