Helping to develop small and medium sized South African exporters: defining a Canadian role

Abstract

The current study aims to broaden our existing knowledge with respect to the export behavior of South African SME's and the role that Canadians can play in helping South Africa's economy grow. After analyzing the South African export environment and conducting interviews with the owner/managers from 34 South African small and medium-sized exporters it was concluded that problems endemic to the South African environment appear to be hampering the normal evolutionary behavior predicted by the stages theory of internationalization of South African SME's Canadian firms can help by assisting South African SME's in their efforts towards internationalization and providing a helpful export environment

Cete étude vise à approfondir nos connaissances des habitudes d'exportation des PME sud-africaines et à déterminer le rôle que les Canadiens peuvent jouer dans la croissance de l'économie de l'Afrique du Sud. Après avoir analysé le contexte d'exportation sud-africain et réalisé des entrevues avec des propriétaires/dirigeants de 34 petites et moyennes sociétés exportatrices d'Afrique du Sud, les auteurs de l'étude ont conclu que des problèmes inhérents à l'Afrique du Sud semblaient entraver l'évolution normale prévue par la théorie d'internationalisation graduelle des PME sud-africaines. Les sociétés canadiennes peuvent aider les PME sud-africaines dans leurs tentatives d'internationalisation en créant un contexte d'exportation plus propice
