Die verband tussen lokus van beheer, koherensiesin en werkstevredenheid in 'n provinsiale hospitaal in die Noordwes-Provinsie
Abstract
Work is seen as an integral part of the existence of human beings. Organisations require human
potential at all levels. Job dissatisfaction is often linked to behavioural patterns such as employees
not being punctual and being conspicuous by their absence, high labour turnover and aggression;
whilst job satisfaction is reflected in the positive behavioural patterns and attitude toward the
organisation. Organisations in the competitive market benefit greatly if its employees' job
satisfaction is increased. Job satisfaction is a complex variable influenced by the dispositional
attributes of individuals and the situational factors in the work environment.
The aim of this study was to determine if there is a correlation between an individual's
psychological well-being (locus of control and sense of coherence) and job satisfaction.
Locus of control reflects the individual's general perception, i.e. to what extent an individual can
control or can be controlled by the environment. Sense of coherence reflects an individual' s trust
that his environment (internal and external) will be predictable, manageable, significant and that it
will comply with his expectations. Various other factors influencing job satisfaction are pointed
out.
The research hypotheses was tested by using a correlation survey design. The research group
comprised of 68 employees; 3 0 junior management members and 2 top management members in a
provincial hospital in the North-West Province. The research group completed the following
three questionnaires. The Minnesota satisfaction questionnaire was used to measure job
satisfaction whilst the sense of coherence questionnaire and locus of control questionnaire were
used to determine the respective aspects.
The empirical study has positively concluded that there is a correlation between the employee's
sense of coherence, locus of control and job satisfaction.
