Abstract

In this study the concept of professional behaviour is investigated. Professional behaviour is based on two pillars namely the professional behaviour code and the Education Affairs Act (House of Assembly) 1988 (Act no. 70 of 1988). This study also investigates the implications of the violation of professional behaviour. It includes the disciplinary process which is implemented by the TFC when the professional behaviour code is violated; the action taken by the Management Board at the government supported schools; as well as the Departemental maintenance of professional behaviour. The responsibility of the headmaster concerning the professional behaviour of his teaching staff, has also been considered. In order to improve the professional behaviour of his teaching staff, the headmaster should in the first place improve his own knowledge regarding professional behaviour. During the emperical research the headmasters had come to the realization that the teachers' knowledge concerning professional behaviour depended on their own knowledge of professional behaviour. The conclusion derived from the emperical research was that neither the headmasters nor teachers have sufficient knowledge concerning professional behaviour to improve their knowledge of professional behaviour. The headmaster should make use of certain methods in order to improve his teachers' professional behaviour. The in service training could be either formal or informal. It was found that most headmasters do in service training during staff meetings and personal interviews. As soon as the professional behaviour of the teaching staff is improved by the headmaster, the teacher will act in a more professional way and that will increase the professional status of the teaching career.
